Don't let your social media go on summer holiday

So here we are deep in the midst of the summer holidays - does that mean we forget about marketing our businesses for a week or two?
Well even as Cliff Richard jumped on the red bus and made for his summer getaway in the famous film, we’re sure he was agonising over whether he should leave a gaping hole in his social media promotion, sit down and prepare a raft of scheduling, or just take a punt and hope he got some wifi so he can post while away.
It’s a poser that all businesses must face, especially those without marketing support via internal or external teams.
If you are a small business and you work your social media yourself just what should you do?
Well as with many things a mix of options is ideal.
Firstly there’s the big no-no. Just because a number of your customers are away on holiday, don’t assume they aren’t picking up emails, or checking out Facebook, Twitter and other streams. Indeed the summer is a great time for people to make posts as they have time to read them so the first option of just ignoring social media for a week or two is out.
Scheduling is of course a great help, and we would advise a strong backbone of messages designed to keep your business in the forefront of your followers’ thoughts.
Keep them crisp, informative and make sure that there is a call to action. Schedule these for times where you will get maximum exposure.
But of course social media is about engagement stupid. It’s not a one-way street so make sure (and this can be access dependant) that you are also active on sites, retweeting, sharing and just having a good old chat.
We know it’s your holiday so there’s no need to spend too long on this but allied to some well scheduled posts, there’s no need why you shouldn’t come back from your holidays to some brilliant new followers, and some new business.
Oh and if you’re wondering if this was written in December 2014 and has been scheduled for the summer of 2016 and all points in between, well it’s noon on August 16 2016, and we’re still celebrating the Charlotte Dujardin gold and Mark Cavendish silver in Rio yesterday!!
